Lobster Harvesting that Protects Whales

Attention seafood lovers. When shopping or eating out, look for lobster with a green band whale tail symbol on its claw that says Massachusetts.  The green band means the lobster was caught using traps linked to sinking groundline on the seabed —a method safer for whales.

Earlier this season, WDCS and other organizations helped launch, “Massachusetts lobster fishing: The right way,” a program designed to educate and promote sustainable lobster fishing and reduce entanglement threats to whales off the East Coast.

Use of floating lines, a traditional but avoidable lobster fishing method, is still unfortunately common practice. Difficult to detect, floating line ensnarls hundreds of whales yearly.

Read more here about WDCS’s collaborative work to promote lobster catch with sinking groundline.
