What better way to show your support for whale and our watery planet then by attending the Rally for Whales and March on The White House at this year's Earth Day celebration.
On the National Mall, Washington DC on Thursday, April 22, the hour of 12 to 1 pm will be dedicated to whales. Particular important this year due to the whaling package developed by officials from the
US and eleven other nations to break a perceived impasse at the
International Whaling Commission - the international treaty organization
responsible for managing the world’s whale populations. In the over two
decades since a moratorium on all commercial whaling was put into
place, Norway, Japan and Iceland have continued to kill tens of
thousands of whales using loopholes in the treaty’s convention. Despite
international condemnation, they have successfully brought the IWC to a
standstill and now this deal has been negotiated to "bring whaling under
IWC control" by sanctioning these nations’ rogue whaling operations.
The US has yet to take a
formal position on the deal, despite taking a lead in the negotiations
and developing the package. Although many IWC member nations are
following the U.S. and are capitulating to the whaling nations, others
including the UK and Australia are vocally opposing the deal.
