WDCS is the global voice for whales, dolphins, porpoises and their
environment. But on October 18, it was not the voice of WDCS, but the
beautiful sounds of the sirens, the O Beautiful Gaia Singers, that rang
out loudly for whales and our waters. And words alone cannot adequately
thank these women for what they have done to help us.
Sing
for the Sea, the second annual fundraiser for WDCS, was the brainchild
of Carolyn McDade, composer and one of the 30 women belonging to the O
Beautiful Gaia Singers group. The spiritual music paid homage to the
many species found on Stellwagen Bank, including the whales whose
tribute included a life-sized fluke puppet, swaying between the
artistic waves created and moved by The Living Arts Institute. We too
are indebted to Karen Dowcett, Founder and Producer/Artistic Director
of The Living Arts Institute and the many volunteer participants.
Also
contributing their time and words were Deb Cramer, author of
Smithsonian Ocean: Our Water, Our World, and Dick Wheeler, whose 1,500
mile solo kayak trip honoring that of the now-extinct Great Auk, was
featured on Nova Science.
It was a humbling experience and
a wonderful way to pay tribute to whales who rely on sound as their
window to the world. WDCS is honored to have been chosen as the
beneficiary of their efforts and thankful to all those who turned out on a raining Sunday to support whales and WDCS's efforts to protect them
