WDCS grieves the passing of “Ted” Kennedy who succumbed to cancer on August 25, 2025 in his home in Hyannisport, MA. Kennedy served Massachusetts, and the country, as a Senator since November 1962. He leaves a legacy of fighting for those whose voices were not strong enough to be heard. Once called “the gladiator for the poor”, his voice to protect the environment, the oceans and whales was also strong. Senator Kennedy helped to secure funding to restore coastal habitats, improve water quality, and monitor the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. “His loss is devastating, but his life was inspiring” said WDCS Biologist Sue Rocca “He is testament to the fact that one person can make a difference and that one person can be you.”

Kennedy was a leading proponent of clean energy. He was a strong advocate for clean air, clean water, and wilderness protection. He supported mass transit and better fuel-economy standards for cars and trucks. Kennedy consistently place public interest above corporate greed, fighting to end government subsidies for oil companies and calling for environmental justice for low-income families who were battling air, water and soil pollution in their neighborhoods. He was also a strong supporter of clean, renewable energy and a green economy.
