March 3rd 2009 is a good day for Endangered Species because it means protection is the same for them as it was on March 3rd 2008! On March 3rd, the Obama Administration has reinforced the Endangered Species Act by reinstating the need for agencies to consult with wildlife experts prior to permitting actions.
On December 11th 2008, with literally only weeks left in office, the Bush Administration imposed a final attack on the Endangered Species Act - all in the name of "streamlining" it- as the Department of Interior announced the passage of a rule to modify the requirements of the Endangered Species Act. The changes allowed agencies to permit potentially harmful actions that could impact endangered species and their habitats without consulting with federal wildlife experts.
"It’s not often that one considers the status quo as progress" said WDCS Senior Biologist Regina Asmutis-Silvia "but, in this case, going back to what we had is success." WDCS applauds the Obama Administration for repealing this provision and looks forward to working for a future filled with meaningful protection for the environment on which we all depend.
