WDCS, in collaboration with partners of its Dolphin SMART program, launched the first set of lectures in its series to highlight dolphin research in Florida, and provide information to an interested public in Key West on January 12th. Dr. Jenny Litz of the NMFS Southeast Region Fisheries Science Center, and Laura Engleby of the Dolphin Ecology Project, presented on the health of dolphins in the Biscayne Bay ecosystem and Key West coastal bottlenose dolphins, respectively. Over 170 people attended the lecture--a true indication of the interest of the community in dolphin conservation and research! On January 13th, and subsequent to this evening lecture, a third dolphin tour operator training in partnership with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and NMFS was provided to dolphin tour operators interested in participating in our Dolphin SMART education and recognition program (see www.dolphinsmart.org). Six new operators attended the training, along with one concierge, who has subsequently asked our Dolphin SMART coordinator to present to the Inn Keepers Association, which will assist in our outreach to the concierge/tour booking community. Newspaper articles announced the event and training, as well as radio spots and postings on community calendars. Captain Lisa Reedy of Sunny Days Dolphin Cat was selected as "Citizen of the Day" for her participation in Dolphin SMART. Dolphin SMART is continuing to expand to locations in Alabama and Hawaii.
