Thank you for all your support in 2008! Here’s our top 10 highlights from the year- we look forward to another successful year of whale protection in 2009!
10. Expanded Dolphin SMART- an education program to ensure safe boating around dolphins
09. Visited more than 1500 students in New England, teaching them about whales, particularly the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, and the importance their ocean habitat.
08. Blocked an attempt by Greenland to hunt humpback whales.
07. Ensured that the US Coast Guard must consult the National Marine Fisheries Service before developing new shipping lanes in order to protect whales from vessel strikes.
06. Expanded our intern program and conservation message to two additional whale watching operations, recording more than 29,000 whale sightings.
05. Expanded “Going Green” program through educational programs in schools, public events, and whale watches. On whale watches alone WDCS is responsible for recycling 5021 bottles and cans, converting them into 10,276 hours of electricity.
04. Documented humpback whales off the Turks and Caicos Islands including known animals from the Gulf of Maine
03. Identified more than 228 individual humpback whales and 27 new calves in our population.
02. Ensured the release of a Federal Rule to slow vessels down in critically endangered right whale habitat.
01. Initiated Masslobster.org, a cooperative program of WDCS, Massachusetts Lobstermans Association, Massachusetts Dept. of Marine Fisheries and Ocean Conservancy promoting lobstermens use of sinking gound-line to reduce entanglement risk to large whales.
Lastly, we welcome a New US Administration whom we look forward to working with and ensuring whales and their homes receive protection throughout the upcoming year!
