WDCS Offers Reward After Dolphin Is Shot Dead

WDCS is offering a $1500 reward for information relating to the shooting of a protected bottlenose dolphin in Louisiana.
 
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the US government agency concerned with the state of the ocean, received a report on Saturday 22nd September of a bottlenose dolphin found dead on Elmer's Island in Louisiana. Tests on the body later revealed the dolphin died of a gunshot wound.
 
“We are pleased that we can offer this reward in support of NOAA’s ongoing investigation and as a reflection of our commitment to protect dolphins in the Gulf Region,” said Courtney Vail, campaigns manager for WDCS.  “These dolphins continue to face impacts from the Gulf oil spill, fishing gear entanglements and habitat loss.  It is extremely disturbing that they are also subjected to brutal attacks and vandalism from the public. This is not the first time dolphins have been killed or wounded by gun shot, and those responsible must be brought to justice.”
 
Wild dolphins are protected under the US Marine Mammal Protection Act. It is illegal to harass, harm, kill or feed these animals.   
 
WDCS is seeking information from anyone who may have details about this incident and is encouraging the public to call the NOAA Enforcement Hotline in the US on 1-800-853-1964.
