We have some wonderful news!  After years of diligent work by WDCS and support from our dedicated friends of the Whale Adoption Project like you – critically endangered Northern right whales are now protected by a rule to reduce vessel speed in their habitat.  The rule goes into effect December 9, 2008!

This incredible achievement could not have happened without the dedicated efforts of many conservation groups including the Humane Society of the United States, Defenders of Wildlife, WDCS and, of course, you!  It is with deepest gratitude that we are writing to you now to thank you for your part in this success for Northern Atlantic right whale protection.

WDCS has campaigned continuously to get this proposed action in place since 2004 – so this significant result represents the culmination of years of fighting to protect these critically endangered whales from extinction.  Over this time period, at least 21 right whales were struck and/or killed by vessels.   And even the government acknowledges that the loss of one animal a year from this population from human causes could jeopardize the future of this species.

With fewer than 400 animals remaining, the protection of each and every right whale matters and the assistance of each and every one of our supporters makes a difference.

Thank you for helping to make this happen.
